The 2011 NEC code requires that the switch loop use wires of the proper color code to signify hot wires. A white wire signifies a neutral wire. From a physical wiring standpoint it will be necessary, at a minimum to run 14 3 cable which contains a black, red and white wire. Both the black and red colors signify a hot or live wire.

Because the electrical code as of the 2011 NEC update requires a neutral wire in most new switch boxes, a 3 wire cable runs between the light and switch. The red and black are used for hot and the white neutral wire at the switch box allows for powering a timer, remote control, or other programmable switch.

Oregon adopted it back in 2011, however I had done little wiring in the house, and was not familiar with all the new codes (mainly AFCIs). Oregon has fully adopted the 2011 NEC AFCI code, and will easy to implement it added a large cost to the project (see below).

But if there is no return wire (neutral or returning switch loop wire) in the cable, all power is in one direction risking inductive heat buildup. A two wire cable used just for travelers on three way switches is a one way path and not allowed under the code. – bib Jul 10 '15 at 14:42

2011 NEC New Code Rule The NEC 2011 (National Electrical Code) for the United States has instated a new code rule as it relates to switch circuits. 3 Way Switch Wiring 3 Way Switch Wiring circuits designed to control one or more fixtures from two locations.

I understand that 2011 NEC will require a grounded (neutral) wire to be pulled to every switch. 300.3(B) requires that all the wires of a circuit be ran in the same conduit, raceway, or jacket. This is to prevent CEMF. doesn't matter how you slice it, you would need a minimum of 4 wires to run a 3 and 4 way between the switches.

The white wire carries line, the black wire carries the switched line. Since the white wire is hot, a black piece of electrical tape is placed on each end. This alternate type of wiring is no longer allowed by the NEC as of 2011 if a neutral wire is not present inside each switch box.

3 Way Switch Wiring Diagram Line to Light Fixture. Line voltage enters the light fixture outlet box. No longer allowed after 2011 NEC (if no neutral wire in switch boxes) 3 Way Switch Wiring Diagram Light Fixture Between Switches. Line voltage enters the first 3 way switch outlet box, light fixture is located between switch boxes. No longer allowed after 2011 NEC (if no neutral wire in switch boxes)

When wiring lighting circuits supplied by a grounded general purpose branch circuit, the 2011 NEC now requires you to provide a neutral conductor at nearly every switch point [404.2(C)]. The purpose for this is to complete a circuit path for electronic lighting control devices, such as occupancy sensors.

The 2011 Code changed the requirements for boxes and wiring methods for electric discharge luminaires to include LED luminaires. Electric discharge and LED luminaires supported independently of the outlet box must be connected to the branch circuit with a raceway or with Types MC, AC, or NM cable [410.24(A)].
